Anyone? Mine reads too high, it's a zenor diode voltage stabiliser that should give out 5.5V, but instead regulates to 7.6V.
I'm guessing this is the problem as it reads too high by about the same factor as the voltage is out of kilter.
Is there any bodgery available or am I looking for a new regulator?

I've got a spare VDO 50/6/1 stabiliser which I was told was for a bay but doesn't look like the ones in the JK or VWH pics.
It's got one male and one female electrical connector and has 74 and "achtung" and two other words I can't read printed on the side but I'm pretty sure neither of them is Spitfire.
I was told that it was working but have never tested it.
Let me know if it might be of use and, if so, I'll try and post a pic.
It's of no use to me as I've an early gauge so if you want it it's free, if you don't and it's of use to someone else on here the deals the same.

Yeeha! Fixed it. I just slapped the binnacle in without much thought, the gauge "worked" so that was that at the time. After some experimenting, despite somebody's superb job mounting the stabiliser so the case wasn't earthed, it shouldn't be insulated! Insulation removed -5.3V - near enough, it'll read a weeny bit under. I love a free fix, oh yes.

Thanks for the offer chad, the one I have is 73-79 as sold everywhere so your early one wouldn't have worked.

No problem - glad it's fixed.
I thought that the earlies didn't have a stabiliser, only the lates.

No problem - glad it's fixed. I thought that the earlies didn't have a stabiliser, only the lates. They all have them but there's a variety of types. Fuel reading has gone from just above half to just below 1/4. In old money I'd have run out of petrol. I've only done 90 miles from a full tank so it's still not right. I'll brim it tomorrow and see what happens.

I may have one in a box somewhere but won't know until I get back in a few days. Gotta go up north and sort me old mans house and garage out. It's yours if I have.

I'll carry on messing with this for a while it's ---ing murder getting the gauges back in and they're doing what they should. Sender next, it's a new one but might need adjusting, I have access if I can be arsed to remove the bed and the rear cupboard to remove some ply to get at it. Probably easier to lower the engine a bit and take the tank out. Buggeration.

I'm not electrician, but as a quick bodge, would adding a resistor lower the reading if its too high? Although I have no idea how you would work out how much resistance is called for..

I think it reads too low now the voltage is correct. It's an ammeter really, the resistance changes the amps as the volts are stable. I=V/R. Full is lowest resistance = highest amps so I need to lower the resistance to get a higher reading. It may be the 40 year old wiring needs replacing or likely just an inch at each end.

Ah, I see. Mine has read lower and lower over the years... from an empty tank it takes 4 gallons before the gauge starts to move... might have a look at it one day.

I would love to have a fuel gauge that actually reads correctly. I think in the early days I went through a faze of have around 3 new senders over a period of 2 years and each one read correctly for a short period of time. The only time mine reads correctly is when I fill it up.

I've never actually run out, but have got 53L in once or twice so nearly have. I'll fill up later so maybe that'll give me some idea. My westy used to have a couple of gallons left when it read below empty, I think I may be rejoining that club now it's "fixed". I'm not sure which is most annoying! IIRC there's an extension wire between the loom and the sender, if I could get at the join I could replace the loom bit but I think it's behind the firewall?
