Bastard van has started jumping out of fourth. It started after I fixed my oil leak which didn't involve moving engine or gearbox, but I did have to boot the silencer back on pretty hard.
Having shimmied under I find in 2nd and 4th the rear coupler is hard against an I-beam, hopefully that's stopping it engaging 4th properly. Possibly the rod is bent down too much at the end too as it catches at the bottom but looks like it should slip between the flanges. Ooer missus.
Anyone else had this problem?

Get a bongo or I do believe there's a vw event on somewhere today.... I'm tempted to bend the flange down a bit with molegrips. But this problem shouldn't be occurring so I'm having a think. I will remove it's pinch bolt and look in the hole to check the dimple is in line. It's possible that I need to shift engine and box back 5mm or so.

On closer inspection one of the front gearbox mount bolts was a bit loose, you can see where one prong has been moving a few mm. Loosened, barred the lot backwards and tightened. The bang I've been getting will have been that lower mount stud in the picture hitting the clamping bar. The gear coupling now stops a mm short of the I-beam. All sorted I hope. Time will tell but unless it was a wierd coincidence that's that.

Looking at both pictures the gearbox is too low as well. Next time I'm near a trolley jack. Actually, that's really the main trouble. If the gearbox was up a bit the coupling would be above the flange it was banging into.
Sadly, knowing me, I wouldn't have done any of this at Techenders.

I'm wondering if some people's "selecting second" problems could be related to this. Brick wall, brick wall, clonks into gear could be explained by low gearbox causing coupler to foul the I-beam then clonking past? Probably not but it's another thing to look at.

Is the coupler clearing the I beam now? I'd be tempted to try your first thought and adjust the lip of the beam... other than that, maybe hockey stick / bush worn? Have you had this box apart in the past?
