Right, I've just changed the battery positive and negative and the gearbox earth strap. The engine starts lovely but the ignition light comes ON when I Rev the engine and goes Out when I come off the gas and let it idle. wtf?

Is it actually charging? Voltmeter it while running. Regulator fault?

Could be regulator or loose alternator cable

Is it actually charging? Voltmeter it while running. Regulator fault? Ok, I've just checked it and it's charging at just over 13v, about 13.7 ish. The light is on very faintly at idle and brightens as I Rev it. is there anything I could have left off/disturbed as I changed all the battery cables?

I think bad connection on alt light circuit and as you've been mucking about in the engine bay - that blue regulator wire one takes a feed off for the split charger would be worth a look.

I've just had a play with the engine running and trying the wiring but everything looks ok and wiggling the wires doesn't make any difference to the light. My wiring is a bit messy in though in the engine bay. g

Over to you then. Remember I'm so clever I bought a battery and alternator before finding a £3 earth lead would have done it.

Is it internal regulator? Just one fat red wire to battery, and the blue wire to the alt light? If so, measure the voltage at the terminal on the alt that the blue wire is on, with the ignition on, then with the engine idling, then revving it. It should be 0v until the engine is running, then 12v ish when running.

I think it's something like that because it worked fine before I played with it. Fingers crossed that I find something and fix it because then Jan'll think I'm a superhero.

Right I've just had a look and found a couple of dodgy connections on that wire so I remade those properly and started the engine up with my fingers crossed. The ignition light is still on so I measured the voltage on the blue wire and at idle it's 13v ish and steadily goes up the faster the engine goes. It got as high as 17v at about 2 to 3000 revs. does this indicate that my voltage regulator is knackered? I'll get a pic of the box the wire goes into and maybe someone will be able to identify if it's actually an external voltage regulator.

Yes, it does sound like voltage regulator and will likely have boiled away some acid in your battery or could have completely knackered the plates. You could try topping it up with deionised water. Any smells? Smells like strong exhaust fumes or bad eggs through the heating = battery boiling.
