Is this an external regulator?
Sorry for the delays in replying but my iPad is playing up again and doesn't seem to work unless I throw it across the room in frustration.

Just answered my own question, I looked at voltage regulators on just kampers and the exact item is there labelled as......an external regulator.

Well that lot could do with tidying up a bit! If it were wine I'd be looking for a new (used) loom from the alternator to the regulator with the correct plug for the regulator on the end. Hard to find one without burnt out wiring though...
I'll go check my wiring if you suspect yours is wired incorrectly?

In my defence, the wiring is from the previous owner and ive only had the van about nine years so I couldn't possibly have got round to sorting it out before now. :-)
I didn't even know the VR had a proper plug.
It has just occurred to me that I have been measuring and uncontrolled voltage at the VR but presumably at least one of the three contacts must get the raw unregulated voltage in from the alternator.
I believe mine is wired correctly as I haven't moved it since the last time the engine was out.

Ah, yes you may well have been measuring unregulated voltage but if so you've at least proved that the alternator is working. If you haven't touched the wiring and it worked it must be something else. If you find the wire from reg to your split charge relay and measure that at revs you'll know more. It should be blue and probably is - it looks like you have the loom but have just lost the plug. The plug only serves to ensure the reg is connected correctly without having to think.

Ah, I thought you had a type 1 engine.. the wire you want to test is the one that goes off to the front of the van to the ign light, which as zed says, is also used to trigger the split charge relay.

I'm drinking Doom Bar at the moment so I'm getting more chilled about the 'leccy in the van, and its raining again.

Did you take the regulator off the firewall? It needs to be earthed through a screw to work properly

That regulator isn't for a t4 engine. Seems you have a mix n match

Mate I have a voltage regulator I can send you. The one I have has an earth lug in it which is earthed when it is screwed to the firewall.
