Matt why bother with the cat? my lambda is fitted into the exhaust pipe prior to the back box. I didn't bother with a stainless joby, just cobbled together by the guy who fitted it, not pretty but does the job, out of sight from the rear. Quick cheap and easy to get me on the road. Going to smash the innards out of the cat next time I have a spare day.

Hi Matt
Got any photos of how your engine bar/mount is welded in.

2l Subaru just isn't enough in a baywindow camper after all the effort involved in fitting one so I've always said. Power too far up the revs is a bit thrashy. What you need is a 2.5l one, worth the trouble of changing then I've always thought.

I was looking for a gearbox and a whole car with a 2.5 came up. It was so cheap it was rude not too. If I change my mind I can sell it and make money!!

Fit it because a 2l barely wins on cost or reliability, the mpg is marginal and you have to rev it to get the beans. To read on the other side you'd think a 2l subaru is the second coming of Christ, that air cooled are not reliable enough to risk going to the end of the street and a decent one costs £7k. If I posted on TLB I'd make monkeybike look polite. We all know that subaru has extra valves so they can be smaller. That's all it has over air cooled...

That's interesting.
I guess that a lot of it depends on the engine builder as Razzyh seems to have no end of problems with his air-cooled.
Hopefully it'll be a long time before I'm in the market for a new engine but it's provided me with some food for thought.
Thanks

He has some funny ideas that he refused to discuss and he let people believe he'd built his own engine, which he hadn't. Plus he only built engines that didn't require machining and over-cammed and over CR'd them chasing HP IMO. razzyh did your buyer find the problem with your over heating engine? My air cooled build started from scratch and was about £2.5k all in including the donor engine and £350 "wasted" on con rods that I probably didn't need. Far from the huge sums the subaru lovers use to justify their choices.

I was tempted myself just to find out! If Rob hadn't slowed to a virtual standstill I'd have got him to investigate and rebuild it, then sold it on. I'd has broken even at worst and satisfied my curiosity.

I bolted the bits on and fitted it to the van, but Rob built the engine.
