Mine runs at about 87 if I recal. I have an adjustable rad fan switch set at 90, which only really happens when sitting in traffic.

mine is run from the ECU, surely that is best as it is the ecu that sorts fuel out and tell sthe fans when to com eon etc.its all linked then. its just from going by my gauge so it may read slighlty differently. or it may just be my enigne combo. Yeah mine is off the ecu, I think that's best too. Strange how my fans kick in at 100 and yours 90 but both run off the ecu, maybe my gauge is out.

i think only one of my fans kicks in at 90, havent heard the other one come on but then i'm not actually sure. i know i now nice under floor heating after a drive!!

Reverse the fan to suck rather than blow? nah it needs to suck and the heat isnt that bad, just nice after a drive, so the floor is warm to the touch.

Just back from the first proper run in mine, been away to France and back about 1,250 miles in all and consumption was a shade under 29 mpg not bad going see we had three bikes on a tow bar mounted rack on the back.
Re temperature mine sits at between 80 and 90. Didn't hear the fans go on not do I know where it is measured from. Not that bothered that I don't know how to fix every last nut and bolt, over the last 2,000 miles it hasn't even needed any oil.
I've just been on the other side and there are pages of people on hols with faults happening and not knowing what to do. So if mine breaks down I'm not alone.

There's a common denominator - I bought a 40 year old vehicle with an engine designed 100 years ago but I'm so fucking lazy I haven't invested a single second in finding out how this incredibly simple thing works. Luckily my holiday was "saved" and I was only charged £400 to set the points gap and £500 for a new coil I didn't need. Personally, I'm glad to no longer be tempted into helping these lazy gits, serves them right.

I had a nose, it's the same on the T4/5 forums as well people buy sheds with bodged wiring and shonky parts etc and have no idea on maintenance but happily stick £800 worth of rangie wheels on..... I suspect mini/beetle/etc forums have similar discussions as well

I spent 6 years pre Subaru struggling with keeping it going and putting it back together after that cock took the engine out and threw the bits into a box and never came back to help put it back together, I remember you and Paul the guy up north talking me through things and for that one day I hope to buy you beer. It ran but was always anxious that it would not make it back. This week I have the wheel bearings to do before the MOT next week, should be a doddle I hope. After discovering its a hard life running a 40 year old vehicle I wonder what the average length of ownership is?

If only everything in life was as reliable as a VW is probably ingrained and if they've just paid say 15k for something it's going to be reliable isn't it. It's a dream and they don't think about any negatives

No that's not two things! £30-40 for a cheap (unconfusing) timing gun, feeler gauges and a spare set of points. Whiles it's going right, point it at your pulley and see where it should be set. Loosen distributor, move it a bit watching with timing gun, put it back where it was. That's one thread saved already and only 20 minutes effort. Read your Haynes to change and set points while you're feeling bouyed up by you new engine wizard status.
