vac advance does f all when you have your foot down. If it did your engine would burn from the inside, starting with the pistons. So you recon it does nothing and even if it did, it would make the engine too hot? it works to advance timing under light throttle which makes engine more effecient and more mpg. The more you put your foot down the less it does. Up a hill foot to floor it does nothing. Too much advance mixed with too much petrol = burning pistons. A clever device really, I have mine attached and working.

So it must do quite a bit in the range of my driving style as I did notice it when the pipe fell off and hence, wasn't working. Never have my foot to the floor going up a hill anyway, just since the service when I noticed something was different. Must have taken him all of 10 seconds to spot that. lol.

So it must do quite a bit in the range of my driving style as I did notice it when the pipe fell off and hence, wasn't working. Never have my foot to the floor going up a hill anyway, just since the service when I noticed something was different. Must have taken him all of 10 seconds to spot that. lol. Boggo 1600's are designed so that whatever you do in terms of foot to floor or attempting mahoosive over-revving doesn't work. VW were interested in longevity, not a load of warranty returns. You can floor it because it's limited by valve size (hence my suggestion of opening them more via higher ratio rockers), and you can't over rev because the cam in/out lobe positions prohibit scavenging and in fact does thee opposite, leaving some exhaust in the cylinder to kill the charge - that's also good for emissions and rather nicely also good for low end grunt where the exhaust is breathed out better. I had 1600 capri once, not for long! That didn't perform any better than a heavy 1600 camper so VW must have been doing something right. For more oomph you need a bigger bang. So you need more mixture. Small valves lifted further improves torque. Small valves produce faster air speeds, lifted higher = easier for mixture to pass. Fast air speed is important at lower revs. Bigger valves allow higher revs. Bigger valves lifted further allow even higher revs. The downside is reduced air speed which shows itself as lack of power at lower revs. But power is torque x revs so by fucking up the low end to double the revs you can make a shit bus engine that sounds good on paper. Everyone looks at HP. If they saw the torque figure, most people couldn't relate to it. Then there's the cam. As well as controlling when and how far it opens the valves, it controls the time both valves are open simultaneously - the overlap. This is very important and one of the most annoying things I've banged my head on over the years... Overlap, there's always some, encourages a smoother flow right through from carb to exhaust by allowing the exhaust time to be sucked out at the top of the stroke after tdc and it's stopped being pushed out. That also causes mixture to be sucked in before tdc, before the piston starts to suck. Increasing the overlap increases this effect, but the more overap introduced, the higher the rev band it will work in. Again this is in persuit of higher revs = higher hp with the same torque. It buggers the lower rev performance because the scavenging the standard cam was doing the racey one isn't. It's not camper friendly to have an engine that needs to be above 3,000rpm. That's what annoys me. There's a huge jump in overlap between standard and even the mildest aftermarket cam. My van might be better with a tad more overlap to allow about another 500-750rpm, I could afford to loose that at the low end because of my large capacity. At the moment it will accelerate smoothly up a noticeable hill in 4th from 25mph. I'd be happy in 3rd at that speed. I'm faced with raising the power band up by 1500rpm minimum which is way too much, I'm not a boy racer. And that is why I recommend the rockers - no loss of anything, more torque through the revs it's designed to scavenge efficiently, there is no downside other than a bit more side thrust on the valve stems. The standard springs will more than cope as it won't rev any higher and the opening only increases from approx 9mm to 11mm. 12.5 is nice but then you're up against the downside of aftermarket cams in a bus engine. I hope that lot makes sense, it's taken many years and much experimentation to get it straight in my head but I am a bit thick and got caught up in HP for a long time.

Need more of it. Coming away from the Whichford classic meet last light a not too steep hill going home was down to 2nd gear. Might be an air leak or summit but generally do need more grunt. So what can I do to get it and maintain simplicity, reliability etc. Running a 1600 sp single carb at present HO series engine. if its not fast enough buy a transit, T5 or similar either that or subaru it and get called all sorts by the air-cooled brigade

Anyroadup, just discovered the butterfly isn't opening fully and can't pull the cable through any more to take up the 10mm of slack it has so that could be the problem. Have to check all the pivoty linkagey things at the pedal end now.

At least you're finding things that are wrong.
I hate it when there's a problem and nothing seems to be wrong, usually an electrical one.
Mind you it could be that I don't know what I'm doing.
