Need more of it. Coming away from the Whichford classic meet last light a not too steep hill going home was down to 2nd gear. Might be an air leak or summit but generally do need more grunt. So what can I do to get it and maintain simplicity, reliability etc. Running a 1600 sp single carb at present HO series engine.

Leave any or all family members at home or let them walk so they can admire the van better as you dissappear.

Grunt= capacity. More cc's needed. To demonstrate, your 1600 has approx 80ft/lb, my 2400 has 180 ft/lb. You can see why I like my engine, I'd be accelerating up your hill in 4th. But that's no help... The very, very cheapest, quickest and easiest way for your engine would be to go halves with a mate on a set of ratio rockers and install on your inlet valves. You could use the whole set and fit on the exhaust valves as well, but that won't gain anything noticeable. You will notice the ones on the inlets though.

So, speaking to a philistine, what do they actually do? Open the valves further and due to the mechanics of that also open it a bit sooner. You get more mixture in and a bigger bang. More power is available through the revs. My LP 1955 ended up (without me knowing) with a standard cam and valves. It was a bit disappointing but fitting ratio rockers perked it right up. Not enough but very noticeable. For the money and ease well worth doing. Next would be a pair of ICT carbs. Easy if you know how to jet them and generally fit and set them up but some people get in a right mess and the new ones are crap.

A new set of piston rings would be next, maybe. Depends how worn they are but a properly functioning bog standard 1600 with a single carb should be pretty nippy as Barney says - I'm guessing his must fit that bill.

I had an mot a couple of weeks back and a service at the same time. I'll take it back to the man and see what he says, he's usually very good.

vac advance does f all when you have your foot down. If it did your engine would burn from the inside, starting with the pistons.
