Drive it harder, it makes a huge difference and doesn't seem to make much difference to the mpg.

Or do you mean accelerate harder? Accelerate faster, cruise faster. My early was toasty at 60+ compared to 40. Driving conditions dictate of course, but pootling doesn't put so much heat through the exhaust.

I guess that the fan is spinning faster if you're in the same gear so more airflow to the front?

I guess that the fan is spinning faster if you're in the same gear so more airflow to the front? That too but the exhaust will also be hotter. Give it a try, drive like your grandad then like you stole it. Somewhere in between is warm without being silly.

Thanks -it's half term so the roads are a bit clogged around here so I'll do the Grandad style this week.

Tiny bit of progress - after running it like a Grandad I felt the heater vents under the back seat - they were warm.
I was sure that I'd closed the vents on the pipes that lead to the 'holes' in the floor.
I had - but when I took them apart the part that blocks the hole was oval and the hole was circular so hot air was getting past.
After looking at some diagrams it looks like I'm missing a part that fits on the floor over the round hole and the pipes fit onto.
Anyway, 2 bits of rag got stuffed in there so I'll see what effect, if any, it has next time I'm out
