You can tell me to mind my own business Simon, but how much fo you think this bodywork resto is going to cost by the time it's painted? A pretty penny for sure, no stone left unturned.

I had mine done to what I think is the same extent. It was totally rebuilt with a new engine etc.etc. so don't have a separate total for the bodywork but guess it was round about the £20k mark, including paint, literally everything was replaced as it was as rotten as a pear. I should have scrapped it but didn't know the extent of the problems until too late.

You can tell me to mind my own business Simon, but how much fo you think this bodywork resto is going to cost by the time it's painted? A pretty penny for sure, no stone left unturned. The original estimate was £8000 for welding £4000 to paint and another £1000 to remove the the beam, gearbox, suspension etc to paint underneath. After the van had been stripped and blasted I got a phone call to advise me that more panels were needed, as I had supplied them to start off. The garage that were doing the work said I could get them myself or they would get them, I decided to get them myself, so the garage gave me their traders discount code for the websites and the list of panels required and off I went and ordered them. Most were from Schofields, I had trouble finding the front wheel tubs as none were available in this country, but I managed to get one from Stamford hall VW show and the other was from a German website. This has added around another £4000 to the cost.

Thanks for your openness I make that £17k.
When I were a lad 10 years ago anorher £1k for seals, lenses etc, but that's no doubt doubled.
Then engine, gearbox, brakes, suspension, steering.
Then interior and poptop shenanigans.
Not to mention the cost of the bus in the first place!
There are lots of Simons in this world. I think I know which Simon you are, orange and white bus. Been to Techenders a few times?
Anyway. Crikey and blimey to your resto, it's going to be stonking!

Hi Zed You are right about the Simon, think we first met in Syston when you were picking up a Laurie Pettit engine and I was having mine fitted by him, I've also been to a few techenders in the past and hope to go to some in the future. The extra £4000 included seals as well, I still have the same engine from Laurie that was running ok, the gearbox was changed over so that should be ok, the same for the suspension as I was running a weedeater 2 beam and adjustable spring plates. Mechanically the bus was ok it was just the rot. The interior I've kept and plan to re-use although I'm going to change the kitchen around.
I know I'm spending more on the van than it would probably be worth, but its been well used over the last 10 years with all the family using it, I've had some inheritance that without it would have meant that the van would probably been broken up and the remainder scrapped. I spoke to the kids about buying another one already done and they didn't;t want to do that, they wanted this one repairing and the say don't become attached to a lump of metal but I hopefully think that it will prove much more than that in the future.

That’ll be mint when it’s finished, and at the end of the day it’s only money and you can’t take it with you.
