Just had a phone call from a mechanic who was setting up the emissions for MOT. and he says I quote “ had it on full advance when I heard a squeal and the engine stopped” So he stripped it down and he says the rear crank bearing as seized due to Oil starvation WTF! Must be a coincidence do you think? He says oil levels where fine but oil looked dirty!

Fark!
This is why I never let my bus out of my sight when it's anywhere near a mechanic! Not saying it's his fault, but if you're their you know what's happened. Even if you are there they do weird things.
"Full advance"? Does he mean he was revving the bollocks off it to get it hot so it passes? I bet he does. One did that to one of mine, fucked up the flywheel seal then complained it had dripped oil on his floor. Tosser, it hadn't leaked a drop before so I know he abused it, but I wasn't there to stop the wanker.
Another fucked the gears then phoned to say it wouldn't go in reverse. Animals.

Sorry to hear this. I'm pretty clueless mechanically so will leave any other comments to Zed, the Pope etc. who know what they're talking about.

Thanks for the reply guys. I haven’t been able to get down there until tomorrow afternoon will have a look and see what has happened. Just really pissed off. That engine hasn’t missed a beat since I rebuilt it. Has only done about 5k. 😩

Oh shit! Is this on your van? How well do you know the mechanic and do you trust him? I’d be bloody surprised if a pre MOT mechanic did anything more than change a light bulb without phoning me first to check that I’d pay for the extra work, removing and stripping an engine seems a bit excessive without contacting you first.

I’d be bloody surprised if a pre MOT mechanic did anything more than change a light bulb without phoning me first to check that I’d pay for the extra work, removing and stripping an engine seems a bit excessive without contacting you first. The van went down for an MOT. Failed on ball joint dust covers emissions and a sticky front offside brake pad. I was also getting a couple of chips done and the underside re under sealed by my pal so he took it to MOT which is next door to his spray shop. There is another VW mechanic that has a workshop down on the ins estate. Bob called me and said van had failed but this guy could do the work all in for £150.0 I am Megga busy at the moment so for ease just said that would be great then I get a phone call to say this has happened 😡 might not be his fault but the engine hadn’t missed a beat since I rebuilt it and it has done about 5k. Went to Scotland last year did 1600 over two weeks not a peep! I am off down to have a look this afternoon but don’t see what will change. So now have to get the bearing removed crank re ground and bearing put back on. Then rebuild the bloody thing! 🧐

If he's stripped it down without asking you i'd be very sus about what he says happened. Why is he testing for emmissions? what year is your bus?

Bus is 1979 mot failed on emissions so this guy was supposed to be setting carbs up cleaning plugs etc to bring emissions in line with testing criteria. Trouble is there is nothing I can do now the crank is seized and needs a new bearing after resurfacing. 😕

The fact he stripped it before giving you the chance to see it sounds dodgy to me.

Will go down this afternoon and have a look Exactly, it's "not me guv I was trying to help" and you'll never know. There's a Spanish bloke in the unit next to Rob Parry who revs modern cars until they won't rev more. These are his customers cars. He's done this every time I've been to see Rob, we have to wait to get a word in. Occaisionally one goes bang. I've been known to shout "ffs mate we're trying to talk here". The guy's a fuckin idiot, he just likes revving the nuts off engines. These people exist and make a living, he's been operating for 3 years that I know of.

Good luck for this afternoon.
As sANDYbAY says his reason(s) for stripping down the engine without speaking to you should prove enlightening as should any discussion about paying for it.
Hopefully he was just trying to be helpful and couldn't get hold of you for some reason.

The added complication is that my mate the sprayer who was doing me a favour by organising this guy to get the van through the MOT feels bloody awful and responsible. Clearly not his fault but I have to tread carefully otherwise he will feel terrible! 😕

That's how my mind works anyway - all that effort to get to exactly where you were or a bit more and have something different at the end.
