Was it your garage who said "changing points could have affected timing"? If it was, I'd be looking for another garage. Are you suggesting that he was being less than truthful.

No. Changing the points WILL affect the timing. There's no "might" about it.

No. Changing the points WILL affect the timing. There's no "might" about it. Indeed. When the man says "changing the points may have effected the timing" the correct reply is "It fuckin well would, for fucks sake didn't you check you lazy git? If you can't be arsed to do a 1 minute check you're no better than a fuckin thief. Next you'll be telling me you never check the valve clearances? Don't answer it's obvious you fuckin don't, you robbing cunt." Or words to that effect.

By now you should be thinking that the only chance you're engine has of survival, other than pure luck, is if you service it yourself, checking the valve gaps, points gap and timing, not simply changing the oil and air filter. BTW it's impossible for that bit of linkage to fall out on it's own, 100% your mechanic lost it while changing an air filter that probably didn't need changing then lied about it. I ran same air filter for 10 years and 30-40,000 miles. Meanwhile he changed points and didn't check timing. I hope you're not being charged grown-up money for this shoddy service.

He didn't actually change the points, cos I asked for the old ones as spares...... he said that he checked, but left well alone if they were okay as new ones were likely to be crap ! Looks like I will be coming to Techenders, if only for someone to show me how to do the valve gaps !
