I wouldn't let anyone adjust anything on my engine. That way if it's wrong it's your own fault, but it won't go wrong because you know you have it set up right. Yes but no but yes you is a bloody mechanical wizard. Only because I was fed up being charged grown up money for idiots tinkering so I thought I might as well be that idiot and save the labour charge.

Maybe the OP could tempt Zed out of retirement once he has finished playing Sailors..

Maybe the OP could tempt Zed out of retirement once he has finished playing Sailors.. I haven't got the heart for it apart from tinkering with carbs, possibly because they are so tinkerable, so many combinations. I asked Laurie once what jetting I should go for for an engine he'd built, see as he had decades of experience and he said: "The thing with jetting is...nobody knows..."

If you are looking for compensation then like the others I think you are to late. If however you feel you know the garage who apparently didn't do such a good job and you just want to educate them and ultimately see if they are decent and have simply made a mistake then it isn't to late just go back explain like you have on here. If they are genuine they will have a good reason why it happened will behave appropriately and hopefully will learn from there mistakes and continue to provide you with a decent service. If on the other hand they are a bunch of knobs then they will soon show their true colours by attempting to bullshit you and therefore you can at that point thank them politely and never go back 👍

I've been using the same VW specialist for over 6 years now and am very pleased with the service that I get.
They are out there but I think that they get overshadowed by the people who are 'in the scene' to make a quick buck.
The one I use doesn't advertise as he has more work than he can deal with, he has something like a 2 year wait for restorations, just as a result of word of mouth recommendations.

I reiterate the above. The guy I use is like that, been around for years, not "in the scene" just loves what he does and if something's not right, I take it straight back, no problem, no charge. The only reason I stopped doing stuff myself is down to me, ie: can't bend or get underneath very well now and his rates are reasonable. I agree, there are some ner do well's out there, you have to ask other people and look around.

Hiya bud, glad you got to a decent place and he fixed your upside down ice cream cone for you. I`d keep using this guy as he has a great rep. I really didn`t like the look of your noisey cupboard in general, and I guess the person working on it didn`t actually re arrange things in there and its just a product of lots of peeps working in that cupboard over the years and nobody really tidying it up. Bang up a shot so the dudes on here can see . It`ll be interesting to see if that brings them round to my way of thinking. Yes you can run a type 2 without knowing too much but you do need a good all rounder because there is a lot of issues that you can`t solve by hooking it up to a lap top and that is part of their beauty. If that Steve is a long way away, let us know where you are area wise and we`ll see if someone has a tame mek nik near there. I`m what is known as an over enthusiastic ametuear, rubbish with lecky, rubbish with carbs, but don`t mind getting dirty and have rebuilt a quite a few motors with some techy help from good mates, some have been great and the biggest disaster I`ve had as a rebuild was put together for me by an engineering shop who managed to pop the shells in backwards. Plus I can weld and Ive done a weld or two on my bus. But I got a guy that I can trust with my van if I need to. He has a T2 works pick up, he has a T2 panel/camper he has his mrs in a T2 and a Herald and a beetle, his lad has a beetle and there are lots of other old motors cascading out of his yard and his home etc. He uses them all as daily motors, oh and a fastback or two. He`s in Bristol and his name is Nick , so if you are near this part of the world give me a shout and I`ll get his number for you. Ozziedog ,,,,,,,,,,,Thats the sort of guy you need

Ozziedog ,,,,,,,,,,,Thats the sort of guy you need Didn't like the look of my noisy cupboard...how very dare you!! lol To be fair, my guy fitted a recon Vega engine 3 years ago, the refurbished carbs about a year later, so any work in their is mainly down to him. I spoke to him yesterday and I got what I thought to be reasonable answers. From comments I have had on forums, changing points could have affected timing. The missing part could have broken up and fallen out....to be fair the ice cream cone issue only started in the Cotswolds. The carbs, well, I always thought he had set them 2 rich....he said to prevent overheating....I like the way they are now set...time will tell about the overheating! The guy in Chester is about 2 hours away as I live in Sheffield....but he will be getting my business in the future. We have relatives we visit in Cheltenham, so Bristol is also not out of the question! So I may meet up with you at some point in the future.

Chester is a nice place so you could combine it with a break (holiday not down) anyway. Hopefully it'll be reliable so you'll only need to do the trip about once per year.

Wonder if anyone has twigged about the ice cream comments ? I`ll just leave them all guessing. You`ll see me maybe at an event somewhere I spect. I got an Early with a very Late Devon poptop with a little leopard trim on the roof and the both bumpers at the moment. Sometimes we is decreated with a howling wolfs head on the roof. Trying to get some tickety stuff organised for Busfest at the moment as everything has been a little unravelled this year but we will more than likely share a beer in a field somewhere also sorting stuff to get to Action soon. Ozziedog,,,,,,,,,,,,,,Catch you soon bud

Was it your garage who said "changing points could have affected timing"? If it was, I'd be looking for another garage.

Just done a run from South Yorkshire to Cheltenham....passing stuff up hills at speeds in excess of 55. Think I may just be in love with the old girl again !

I've read yours and other comments but as you said 'serviced & MOT'd'. A service generally is air filter, oil filter, oil, spark plugs etc. Chances are he probably didn't feel the need to look at anything else unless you mentioned they need looking at. Yes it may have been his fault from previously but if he set the carbs up and doesn't have a rolling Road then I think you took it to the wrong place anyway. Just my 2p's worth. Not meaning to sound harsh or anything.

55 is from choice ( the wifes not mine!) When she dozes off it's normally low 60's ....however the few extra mph don't make journeys much shorter! My guy has a good reputation and is the only one nearby...but I may be using the guy in Chester more. On a stock van, would a rolling road session be any real benefit?

If you need carbs setting up linkage etc. and you don't know what your doing then I think so.
