Not for me, stopped to help someone who broke down, bog standard 1600, single carb, points/ vac dizzy. Driven fine for ages then just suddenly cut out and died. Turn the ignition key and the dash lights come on but nothing else, no click from starter, just dead. Batt shows just over 12v. All connections, wire etc look ok. Coil was very hot so tried substitute but didn't work. Going back with wire to try a hotwire from starter to batt. What else should I look for? Guessing it's electrical as was a sudden cut out?

Try bump starting it I'd have said coil if it cut out whilst driving and now nothing. That rules out fuel

Ha well it's a new ign switch apparently....... A hot wire from batt to starter should work if the switch is faulty yeah?

12v is 75% discharged so it's probably not charging. Then I'd guess he put the lights and wipers on and... Probably also got split charge, connected starter battery to run down leisure battery too.

Yay fixed it with hotwire from starter to battery! Dodgy repro ign switch I'd guess then! As we arrived back on outskirts of Southampton we saw them so stopped, I had a look but nothing obvious so I went home for a spare coil, went and tried that but didn't work, then the " breakdown man" arrived, he had no idea at all. I asked if he had some wire to try the hotwire thing, he says oh no I don't even carry tools. Ffs Theyd missed their ferry to iow, so the breakdown bloke said hed tow them to a garage and they have to find a hotel. Came home, got some more bits, went to get bloke from the pub/hotel, we went to the van at garage and got it going, back tut pub, he bought me a pint, had a chat with him and his Mrs, jobs a goodun! They'll be on ferry first thing in morning.

Battery was getting sluggish trying to start all those times but gave it a boost and it was at 13 something volts (while running) after we got it running so hopefully be ok
