Well I've had the same engine battery in my van since I got it which was about 9 years ago. Never, had a problem with it, never had to charge it but earlier this week it failed to turn the engine over properly. I wired the charger to it and charged it up but it still wasn't doing the business, (not helped I think by my dodgy starter solenoid) it took about forty 'clicks' before it eventually turned over but by then it sounded flat again. I had a bit of a clean out of the rusty positive terminals and scraped off the big marshmallow of corrosion around the positive terminal, charged the battery again and the van leapt into life so we went camping. Twice during the weekend I had to use the leisure battery to jump start the van but it's not playing flat all the time. It's about 50/50 whether it springs into life or just clicks a few times and then turns over too slowly to start the engine. question.... Is it worth just getting a new battery or would it be worth it to get some new positive and negative cables and cleaning all the contacts on the starter motor?

Might be the starter, or that bush in the bell housing, or the battery, or the connections, or the wires, or the ignition switch. Hope that helps.
Mine barely turns the engine the one in three times it engages with the flywheel and actually tries. But it does always start eventually.

9 years is a very good life for a battery in my experience - I'd change it as it can't be much longer for this world even if it was new when you bought your van.
It also knocks one item off Zed's list.

I went through a couple of batteries before I realised it wasn't the issue so fitted new cable to starter & had intended recon my starter but I had borrowed one to stick on which was wrong so I wire brushed all the contacts & put the old one on which did the trick but I did hear the new owner had issues & did end up changing the starter!

I changed the starter a few years ago in an attempt to cure the 'click', 'click' problem. It didn't but as I can hear the clicking coming from the back end of the van I've discounted the ignition switch. as I'm basically as tight as a ducks arse I'll go for the cheaper option of cleaning all the contacts and renewing any dodgy wires I come across.

Then again I bought a new battery and alternator only to find it wasn't earthing properly through my pretty powder coating. There's the lesson.

That's a bit posh most have earthing issues due to rust 😂😂😂

With a multimeter no resistance at rest but with some power going through it the resistance shot up.
