I think I remember you having sent it back a few times. I was wondering how it's going now? And did you go to TE, and if you did how's that other chap doing with his "same builder" overheating bus?

I still need a new engine. I'm not sure how peasoup (nick) is getting on with his engine, last I heard it was back with Paul. Mines still overheating but more concerning is the fact it has zero oil pressure for about 15-30 seconds at start up, since having it I've change the oil 4/5 times and have been getting metal flakes on each occasion.
I'm considering a scooby engine if I can save up enough and the details work/make sense, fellows don't give me any encouragement, I considered matts engine but by the time I knew what was happing with my engine his had sold.

Still drive it. It drives fine, really well actually. Once it's got oil pressure then it seems ok.
It still leaks 🤔 but I've given up caring about that.
I also need to put some thread lock on the gearbox sump bolts, any idea which type I should use?

How fast can you motorway cruise without overheating? Do you have an outboard cooler?

I can do 50 without overheating, 60 it creeps up slowly 70 for about 5 minutes whilst you watch the gauge go to 120/130 then back right off to about 50.
When the fan cuts (external oil cooler) in cruising at 60 is possible but then the gauge sits about 115
On my original engine the fan would cut in only on occasion, cruise all day at 70 but any engine since it always comes on and 70 isn't really possible.

My old 2020 wouldn't go faster than 60mph on a run, that's with an extra cooler. The main difference between that one and my present engine was compression ratio. The old was over 9:1, could have been as high as 9.5:1, this one is just under 8:1.
Paul's view is that CR over 9 and even up to 10 "should be ok with modern fuels". Rob disagrees after decades building all manner of grass track racing engines and trying EVERYTHING you could think of. High CR creates heat in exchange for a bit snappier acceleration particularly at lower revs. To balance out the high CR you could try bigger jets but over fuelling will only compensate to a degree.
If it was just an odd engine running too hot...but several (pretty sure there's at least a third I'd heard of) makes me think there's a basic design flaw going on somewhere and as he dismantles and can't find anything else...

My oil has never been over 95, even at 70mph up long hills and I don't have a fan. The higher CR 2020 would get up to 120 at 65 and I had to let it slow down up hills or it would have carried on heating up.

I just need to find another engine over the next few months. Or go scooby which is a consideration.

Just a thought - my (oil pressure sender is on an extension. If air gets into it, it takes a long time to register, in fact when I built it I had an afternoon of panic as any amount of cranking wouldn't get the light out. I cured by loosening the sender and a couple of cranks to get the air out. So you may actually have oil pressure. Bits in the oil should only be barrels/rings but I've never seen ANY in mine, not even on first oil change - the filter should catch them.

I just need to find another engine over the next few months. Or go scooby which is a consideration. You can't be a million miles from Wisbech? I'd take it to Rob and ask him to rebuild it with bigger B&P's. That way we all get to find out what's been going on and you get a grunty cool running engine. You want to, I'm nosey and Rob has a professional interest. Or at least run it up there and have a chat, he's very, very experienced.

Robert Parry? B&P's are currently 2056 problem is this engine needs completely rebuilding due to no oil on startup. I'm not certain what I'll do engine wise, I don't have the spare cash like I use to. I need to think about it. I'm sure I'll know what to do when the time comes but until then.... Did you hear about Paul's delivery driver doing something to the backend? Never did find the truth out... This is the rear chassis rails...

Oil pressure delay could be air in the sender extension as detailed above - I get same every time I remove sender from it's stalk and some air gets in. I can't see it would still be running if it really had no oil pressure for 10-20 seconds every time you started it.

and this my friends is why I didn't bother spending big bucks on my air cooled and went Subaru. If you are ever in Hampshire and want to take a look let me know.
