My main battery has never charged properly but I've been getting away with it since Christmas by pure luck by driving mainly in the daytime in good weather and giving it a mains charge occasionally on hookup.
I've more than lost my love for shuffling under vans and clearly also too brain lazy to methodically work out what the problem was.
The alternator put out 14v, not enough really, but hey-ho. I suspected it worked, but when asked to supply and power it didn't. E.g. If I put the lights on the fuel pump slowed down but the engine didn't.
I thought it would save me a job and be a nice trip out if I got Flakey to replace the alternator and a good drive home to see what happened.
Nope, still the same. The battery has been down to well below 12v too many times so I replaced that a few days later.
Still nope.
I've sorted it now for a fiver.

Regulator or new earth strap

Regulator or new earth strap I haven't changed the regulator yet, but I will. 14v is not good. The gearbox and battery earth straps are good, the terminals are good, all the wiring is OK. You're still the winner with the cure, but why?

Because...
The alternator bolts to the...alt brackets and...
The alt brackets bolt to the fan housing and...
I had the whole lot powder coated. Mug.

An extra earth strap from the battery earth point on the van directly to the alternator body. Halfords, or it would have been £2.99.

I found out by measuring, with engine running and a few revs to see.. volts between alt output (nearest I could get was a croc clip extension from the starter terminal, you can't get at the alt output on a type-4) and battery +ve, 0v throughout proving at least the +ve wiring to battery from starter if not from alt to starter. If it was a t1 engine you can get to the alt output and would prove +ve wiring all the way from the alt to the battery. and between alt body and battery -ve. This was 0.05v without the lights on but 0.5v with them on. I didn't try with the wipers as well, but I expect it would have shot up further. Testing for continuity had showed no problems. Now when I put the lights on the engine slows down and the fuel pump doesn't.
