I haven't seem it on the ramp but am going to.
The actual sills are about £200 each and £1,500 per side seems to be the rate that's quoted on the various forums & restorers web sites.
I've being using this garage for about 15 years and he's always been fair, as far as I can tell, but is constantly snowed under with work.
I think the quote may include a 'I don't have time to do it element' so he's going to get someone who does these on a regular basis to have a look and then we'll go from there, with him subcontracting it out to someone he's used regularly for about 20 odd years.
I plan on the price coming down but if that what it costs to get it done where I trust the people and can check on it as it's being done then so be it.

Whilst I'm waiting for him to get back to me as to what options I have, after an expert opinion as to just how bad it is, I thought I'd get another estimate so emailed a well known MG restorer.
£2,500 plus VAT per side - so £6,000 to replace a pair of sills!
It's a f****** MGB not a D-type with diamond encrusted unobtanium sills.

It's possibly a shit job in the world of classics panel work. I admit I found it annoying when asked to do sills and outriggers because the geezer who'd done all the cushty bits was "too busy" to do it. Those prices are surely ridiculous? There will be an old boy somewhere who'd make a great job of it for 1/10th of that, you just have to find him.

From speaking to the guy at the garage it is a shit job as virtually everything is fixed to them and they're the only strength in the car - if you open the door of a roadster you can see that they're the only things holding the two halves of the car together.
I'm going to put on my deerstalker hat and go on an old-boy hunt, there's an old style garage with a couple of static MGBs a few miles away. I know one of his customers so I'll start there.

Thanks Ricky - I've heard of him but don't know if he's still around.
I'm going to concentrate fairly locally at first as it'll be easier to check up on progress and it'll also need transporting.
I'm hoping for 2 or 3 options once it's inspected properly - if all are unacceptable then I'll spread the net wider.
I think Zed hit the nail on the head about it being a shit job. I get the impression that the major players in the field are more concerned about doing full scale restorations/reshelling to be bothered about, what is to them, a small and shitty job. Apparently it can also be a can of worms because of the design of the 3 sills a lot of damage can be hidden so it can soon escalate, sometimes needing new floors and wings. I believe mine will probably also need new lower front wing halves, depending on what they find.

I have no idea about MGs, but have seen a few convertible beetles that have been "restored", where the door gaps look fine when you are outside the car, then when you get in and try and shut the door, it hits the B post.. 😂 Obviously convertibles need a lot of extra metalwork along the bottom of the car, so I can see why it may be a bastard of a job. 3 bags a side does seem like crazy money though! Good luck.

Thanks - I'm hoping that the £1,500 per side spoken about by my local garage will be the ceiling for them.
No way am I going to spend 6K - I just can't justify it for what is effectively a toy, albeit with a lot of memories.
