I put this up on EB but got no response probably because no one else has ever had welded up windows. So, this is a general question for those of you that do/have done fabrication work I spose. Hi, the PO of my bus (1970 microbus) decided to weld up all the side windows with steel plates (except the cab of course). The joins are now slightly rusting and I'm thinking about putting the glass back in (I have all the glass). However, I would like to have some sort of middle opening full length window on at least one side. I have the og quarter windows but to be honest, they've seen better days and I like to look of the louvered type or one i've seen that slides open. How realistic would it be to firstly put the glass back in and secondly, find a good quality opening window to fit. Van is a proper microbus not a panel conversion so the windows are recessed. Ta

What a plum the po was!! Not sure how hard it will be to cut the plates out, I guess it depends what kind of job the po did on it. Mine had fixed glass all round, and I replaced the near side middle with an original VW ally framed slider. I wanted the same for my sliding door(left hooker) but struggled to find one. I settled with a new black framed one from jk. I've yet to fit the JK one but it was a good price and looks good quality. I think rick had a few of them in his t2

Hopefully plates are only tacked on? Where are the plates, where windows were or on the outside to make the van smooth? Hopefully the former or you'll have a job getting it to look ok I think. Photos?

Get some pics up, did the PO give anything away why he did this? We're the window surrounds shot so he thought feck it I'll just weld it up? Or was it that he really didn't like curtains?

I had a similar one in the worksop where chap was using the rear for guitars and amps. Just the rear ones and tailgate. He'd inset the panels where the glass was and painted the panels black. I asked why not just paint the glass black? He struggled a bit for an answer, then contented himself with "more secure".

Mines gone full circle . Firstly it was a panel, then someone cut some very very horrible windows into it and they looked crap at best. Then I took them out and the remains of the panel and welded in some proper window frames with proper glass off of a donor I had at the time. I really had to do a lot of repairs to the frames because it was rotty rotty rot rot RHD rustbox which is how I`d ended up with a donor. Anyhow, is there anyway you can have a real good look at how good the frames are, just because there may be a reason for a previous owner to make it panel esque ,.
Ozziedog,,,,,,,,,,,, Might have just fancied it when it was worth £200.
