And the TES bloke is hardly likely to say it's a problem. I'd have argued with him though and got my money back, personally. I've got fussier over the years, eventually. I have had to build some to find out what matters which is stupid really but shows what arse the air cooled engine market is. Seems to be cheap or expensive, nothing between and both ends a gamble.

And there lies the problem, I'm no mechanic and rely on the info from these forums, trying to sort the bullshit from the real knowledge can be hard. Well nowt I can do about it now, runs fine so onwards (after an oil and strainer change ☺)

They only go wrong so much now cos people keep playing n fiddling with them n expecting them to be race vans ,golly they was one of the most reliable delivery and commercial vans going ,l it's why the Germans n others used um . Trouble with rebuilds is you don't know what engine has been rebuilt either and engineers are harder to find that care these days . As you say have a look get a new strainer or give the other one a good wash , if it's still happening ,give the bloke a ring n ask why . Then get him to give you the assurance that if anything goes wrong he will fix it or give you your money back 👍Ps I know your only doing the right thing and checking it .
