An interesting thought occurred to me today as I valiantly fought the crosswinds on the narrow, twisty Noth Norfolk roads. If the little rubber bit that connects the bottom of the steering column to the rest of the steering stuff fails, is the steering still, even loosely, attached. Possibly by the loose bolts that went through the rubber bit, or is the steering completely disconnected. Just a little thought to myself as the big lorries thundered past on the past on the other side of the road.

The rubber can split and fail and you still live. If all the bolts fail you're dead. Sleep tight.

The dangling bolts just reach the bit on the steering box. Do not lift the steering wheel. You'd have 1/2 a wheel free play.

It happened to someone who ended up at my garage, he drove back from France, went home then drove another 70 miles to mine. All with 1/2 wheel play, he hadn't even looked to see what had happened.
