I've got a couple of spare EB ones and plan on selling one.
They both seem to turn smoothly but I'm led to believe that that doesn't mean that they'll be fine when they're on the bus.
Is there any way of checking them off the bus so that I can be fairly sure that they're OK?
I don't want to sell one and then find out it's knackered.

One thing you check for is play in the shaft the arm hangs on. It shouldn't move along it's axis. Or take them apart and inspect the spinning bit on the peg, this is the bit that wears most often. Can be replaced but replacements are pants, I've tried it. Can sometimes be machined too if not too far gone.

Thanks - that's a job for a wet weekend then. Or just sell them "I'm no mechanic but they seem smooth with no obvious play" stylee. Most of the early boxes are mullered beyond repair however so anyone with the tools and determination would convert to a later box after tearing their hair out a few times trying to find good or repair early ones. I did and it was one of the best things I did to my early.

Yeah - I'd thought about that but my original thinking would like to keep the 'best' one for myself for when mine packs up.
It's interesting what you say about a Late box - I'd heard that from a few people so I bought a NOS RHD one for a f**** fortune a few years ago as a backup plan on the basis that I might need it if I couldn't get a good RHD Early one.
Sounds like it's a transplant then and I'll have a quick look at the EB ones then decide how to sell them, probably as you suggest.
As you've done this swap how much lighter is the steering? I broke my wrist a year ago and it's not as strong as it was to the extent that a 'Litesteer' conversion looks likely in the next couple of years or so given the present steering 'weight'.

It's little easier as there is about an extra turn from lock to lock, steering more relaxing (less prescision needed) for same reason, but although noticeably lighter, probably not light enough and no comparison with litesteer at low speed.
