Them older T4's with the 1.9 look the part but really are under powered, I was lucky and had the 2.5 TDI in mine, great for towing and would cruise all day at and above motorway speeds

The shittest t4 engine is the 2.4 non turbo they reckon, there's also a 1.9 non turbo that's pathetic, golf tdi is the swap they do from a very early golf.

To celebrate getting its MOT, I treated it to a bit of engine tinkery tonight... Fitted boost gauge so I could see what the turbo is doing, blanked off the EGR, tweaked the turbo and cranked the fuel pressure up a bit. Its now pulling a lot better, but Im only getting 9 psi boost, so may tinker a bit further as 13-15 psi is suggested as a good boost. Might consider cobbling together an intercooler as well.

Fitted the 50mm drop rear springs, and wound the front down to level it out. I quite like the ride height now, but have got a towbar on order, and I think it may be too low when towing a car transporter trailer. Will have to see how it goes. Also lined out the back in anthracite carpet until I ran out lol...still got the rear headlining to do to tidy it up inside.

After more tinkering, and fixing ร boost leak, it now boosts to 13 psi easily enough. Next time I have a few spare pennies I will fashion together a front mounted intercooler, so I can wind the pressure up a bit more, then a taller fifth gear cog. ๐

It's just a phase through life innit, I had one inbetween having my Early and Late bay, I love reading posts in other places from people who have just bought a bus or only had one a few years saying they'll "never sell it" or T4's and T5's are "rubbish builders vans" or " Scooby " is the way forward, 99% of those posters know has much about Vw buses and camping in them has my new Puppy. In 2 or 3 years time like 2 or 3 years ago it'll be new names who nobody knows saying the exact same thing, Take it from me, do what yer want coz non of it means anything. Haha I think I've said all of the above at some point ๐ I also remember you being one of the haters when I went scooby ๐ It's all bullshit really init, I agree with what you say. You've also missed the bit where all the assholes that used to spout on about "keep it stock", the westy snobs etc. Ive always had the philosophy it's your bus do want you want with it, and that was generally my stock answer on other forums when people were almost asking the "forums" permission to modify or change their buses. Ive never had an issue with what vehicle people use for camping or leisure variety is the spice of life I guess. What I do know is my family are outgrowing my bus but I really don't want to sell it.

Right then... just in case anyone is interested, a little update.. A recent jaunt to Ikea taught me several things.. 1 Never agree to go to Ikea 2 My van was slow 3 My van was noisy 4, See 1 So, time to crack on with the Intercooler idea... First up, I found the cheapest intercooler I could find on ebay and hoped I could make it fit... Purely by luck, it was spot on! So a big hole was cut in the front bumper, and a MK4 Golf grill fitted.. Then after guessing roughly what pipework was needed, the EGR was lobbed over the fence, the flange turned round 180 degrees, and then I plumbed it all in. The result? noticably torquier, and pulls smoothly all through the rev range. Then, after reading up on the T4 forum about fuel pump timing, I decided mine was retarded, so checked it out. It was miles out.. so timed roughly using the locking tools, and once more the torque is improved! It really pulls well now. I have bought the kit to time it properly now, so thats this weeks job sorted.
