I've finally given up trying to get the rust off my stainless steel hubcaps, bought because I stupidly thought that they wouldn't rust.
I'm loath to pay £60 each for new VW ones.
What have you got?

Just got some supposedly genuine VW ones as a birthday present.
Will be interested to see how these last...

If they're like the £5 genuine VW Brazil ones I got 20 years ago, about 24 hours. If they're like the £45 ones I immediately replaced them with, 10 years on they'll be as good as new without ever polishing them. Mine have all turned orange over the winter, they were the best looking from a pile of about 20.

At 60 notes each they'd better be like your £45 ones....
I've given them 2 coats of wax so fingers crossed
They weigh over 500g each compared to the pattern ones I have at 400g so I'm hopeful, optimistically thinking that heavier is better.

Have they gone rusty yet?

Just checked - not yet - but living 200 yards from the sea doesn't augur well for them. I can see me getting paranoid, assuming I'm not already, and cleaning them frequently like the people with 'show' buses. Maybe I should buy a T4 with steel wheels and plastic wheelcovers?

The reason I replaced all mine was that I had a (rare at the time) complete set of shiney ones that were original to the van and someone pinched them while we were out for the day at the seaside.

There's always someone who'd rather nick things than buy them themselves.
I guess that they think that they're clever.
We had a really nice beach hut at Old Hunstanton in Norfolk which was being broken into on a regular basis even though I'd strengthened all the doors and locks. You'd go there and see a line of beach huts with the doors swinging open.
In the end they started lighting fires so it was time to sell before we found a mound of ash.

I had friends with one in the same place. They got it cheap because it was knackered intending to build a new one themselves. It was made plain that huts not built by their man tended to burn down as they weren't built to their high standards and likewise ones self-repaired tended to suffer vandalism and break ins for the same reason. Just saying. It's a racket.

Yeah - I got that impression which was part of the reason for selling it, ironically to the guy who seemed to control them. There's f*** all you can do about it as if they are seen around at night they say that they're looking out for anyone who might break in. As you say it's a racket with people who can afford a beach hut as fair game.
The last straw was spending all my summer holiday fixing and painting it for it to be broken into the next week.
At the end of the day we had it for a few very enjoyable years when the boys were growing up and sold it at a reasonable profit. Fortunately the timing coincided with our move to Norfolk so we now rent one in Cromer which is 2 miles away rather than 50.

You'll have walked the coast path then? Very nice, I did it in 10 mile chunks a few years ago.

Not yet I'm afraid - I had a knee op a few years ago but still working on strengthening it up.
5 miles a day is the most at the moment but it's improving at a OK rate.
