Now the empi oil thermostat has sprung a leak. Hopefully I have enough oil pipe to take it out of the cooler circuit.
But the sun is shining again so it could be worse.

The job itself not too bad but the sloping loose stones car park and no jack makes it harder than it needs to be.
Hoses replaced, thermostat in a bag. I'll take it apart and see why it leaks and if I can fix it. It was very good at keeping the oil at a constant temperature.

On the other hand it's great on the marina, by the time I was done, passing moorers had donated a bag of cable ties, a roll of blue paper towel, two pints of milk and 18 cans of Stella.

Is this the engine you rebuilt ? or was this done by Robert P? Rob built the engine, I built it up including new (leaking) standard oil cooler and (leaking) thermostat. His bits don't leak and the engine is still a quiet, smooth running torquey, lovely thing. The bits I fitted piss oil out. Grr. The thermostat will come apart. I suspect a new o-ring would fix it but for now it's in a carrier bag. I might take it apart later.

...So I did take it apart and does seem like replacing the two o-rings would sort it out. It's only lasted 10,000 miles or so but that's life. I'll get a big bag of o-rings.

I posted the pic because it's interesting to see inside such things. Shame it leaks now but it's well made, simple and works very well. I recommend one of these and a largish cooler, mines 15 row IIRC. The oil temp stays constant at 90degs - ish on mine unless I'm thrashing along the motorway at 70mph and it warms up much faster than with just an extra cooler.

So I got up at 5am (eek) wibbled and wobbled 190 miles to Wisbech, managed with Rob's help and cunning to get the cooler changed without even lowering the engine, then wobbled 190 miles back to Lancashire. Did it work? Dunno, it was dark and raining when I got back, I'd have had to kneel in a puddle to see and I was knackered. I managed to make a hole in one hx during the process but I reckon it's weldable in situ...But I don't have a MIG handy and Rob only has an old stick welder so that's now on the list.

I had a good look today and it's all dry, no leaks. Yippee! That's been leaking a bit from new but took a lot of tracking down. Next job, wash it and then no more oil splatters up the back.
