How I love 12v vehicle wiring. Not.
My ---ing battery goes a bit flat if I don't use the van for a coulple of weeks. It's always done this but I thought it was time to investigate.
Firstly I disconnected the battery and measured the resitance across the leads looking for continuity (a complete circuit) while pulling the fuses one at a time until it went way. Highly technical this! Removing fuse 9 got open circuit so that narrowed it down a bit.
Fuses back in, battery connected showed 12v at fuse 9 which should be ignition controlled. I pulled wires off the fuse and tracked it down to the ignition switch black/yellow wire. It's supposed to be switched by the ignition switch but it's still live in the off position.
Also it looks like the ones sold for earlier bays (metal casing), so I don't know which to get. Maybe heritage will know what the difference is.
I'm having a bit of a maintenance frenzy.

If it's an early bay one I've got a NOS one.

If it's an early bay one I've got a NOS one. I think that might be what was fitted. My imagination says perhaps it didn't ever switch completely off then arced inside until it was biggered. But I don't suppose you have a photo anyway?

Thanks. 👍
That looks identical to the one I just removed. My problem now is that although it worked to all intents and purposes, it went wrong and maybe that was because it was technically the wrong switch - maybe!
I think I should play safe and order the technically correct one which has a plastic casing. My thought is that the angle of the slot may be different and doesn't get switched right off. Eying it up it appears to switch off but maybe it didn't...or something. ---ing things!

Heritage - I think that everyone who knew anything has jumped ship. I just phoned them and it was like calling JK. The only info they could come up with was what's written on their website. Utter waste of time. 👎

If you have a plastic steering block housing could it be something to do with earthing, that the metal body switch needs to be touching metal?

If you have a plastic steering block housing could it be something to do with earthing, that the metal body switch needs to be touching metal? I tried heritage again using the online chat and a very helpful chap, George, winkled out the info. The slot is at a different angle. In the off position, mine is in line with the tabs, like the plastic 70-74 ones so mine must just be an original metal cased one that's gone wrong, rather than the wrong type. The early ones come to rest at about 30 degrees from the tabs. After all that JK were £4 cheaper and didn't have a sprouting of extra wires so like the biatch I am I ordered it from there instead. I should have spotted the difference from your photo. Doh!
