Feels like I've told a million people but we were tenters but longed for a more mobile camping experience, something we could jump in and just go to the seaside & if it was a nice weekend we could stay on a campsite relatively cheaply or use a britstop! So basically we always wanted a modern VW campervan but couldn't afford one what would be about 5/6 years ago now, just by chance through an acquaintance of a friend we bought our Bay 'Molly' did a bit of work to her & went camping! Loved it & although we loved the waves we got & the friends we have made we still wanted a modern Camper! This was our Molly This year we finally managed it & bought 'Alfie' although selling the bay was hard as she had become part of the family as these things do it was our mobile piggy bank after having previously put all our modern camper savings into her from buying to the new interior & not forgetting the shiny bits! In all I'd say with the original purchase price & the expenditure over the 4 years of ownership we probably just about broke even which I'd say wasn't bad at all compared to some of the stories I've read. So here he is in all his glory- Alfie doesn't look as cool as our old bay, people don't smile & wave as much (virtually never) but we can go camping whenever we want, I drive him every day to work, he's our family car with far more room than most cars & can carry us 4 plus my stepdad comfortably for day trips and when we take him away with us to a cottage or static caravan style holiday! Yes I don't get free road tax but then the car I had before which I used for work & day to day family stuff was about the same road tax, the insurance is higher but with what I used to pay for both the bay & the car its about the same, fuel I'm paying a little more for my commuting to work compared to the petrol astra i had but then alot less when we go camping! You can't really compare the bay with the T5 because people have bays for different reasons but I believe were able to compare because we bought both vehicles with the intentions to go camping! So I do have a love for campers of all types because they do what we are interested in which is camping so I don't get why some people get all shitty between the different VW models, I have even removed myself from a couple of facebook groups because some twat who thinks his T5 is better than another members T4 or whatever because of this or that is utter bollox in the eyes! If I'm honest I think TLB has currently got this streak in it with threads being started purely to start a row or baiting those who have gone with something different to standard! It maybe what someone wants & enjoys thats fine but to tell people your wasting your money by doing this or that or the other is just irritating so I ignore the post & carry on! The point I'm making is there have been more and more posts I've ignored because of this kind of talk to the point that I think I was ready for a forum like this! Dont get me started on VW shows, the day we drove out of Stanford hall this year & passed a group of men with their sons obviously walking back from the nearby pub after watching the football shouted 'Nice Shit Van' that wasn't friendly banter! I reckon if he could of found something to throw he would of, tosser! I had my kids with me and he had kids with him and it was completely unnecessary to which I now don't want to go to any shows! I only go to admire others campers (all of them) & to buy some camper tat! Fuck that shit I shall look at pictures & order my tat for half the price online! So with that which I may after reading this back need to move part of this post to the random rant thread I started last night... I was checking to see if I'd put this in the proper place & had a read through, bumped it to remind me I need to get the awning out to give it an airing so we can properly photograph it & get it sold, since we went Cornwall last year we have not used it & dont think we shall either! We are content in travelling fairly light & just using the wind out awning for shelter, we don't even use that when pitched up in pub car parks for a cheeky overnighter... I think we paid nearly £600 for it from JK, its got a couple of bay wounds (hole where sliding door got it) but nothing serious just not sure what its worth to someone else though?

When I was all VW giddy in the early days I wanted to show the bus off when camping and found that an Awning blocked it off to anyone who wanted to see it so most times and towards the end of my bus ownership I never really used it, I made do using the Canopy and a windbreak, Having kids and dogs sometimes makes that harder I know. We even tried the Canopy for the first time on the Caravan last weekend and it worked fine but if we're staying for more than a night I suppose we'll use the Caravan awning also, only takes half an hour to put up and nobody wants to see a big white box anyway

I bought a bay because we and another family both got a soaking in a tent while friends in a bay and awning were toasty warm and dry. Without much discussion, the next time we camped together we were in 3 identical 73 Westys. It was quite funny. For the next 10 years we camped together every bank holiday and a few times our main summer holiday. We all went to La Rochelle one summer. Up until I wrecked the engine and found JK chat I had no idea there was a scene that was more than flashing your lights at passing campers and beetles. I hadn't given it a moments thought TBH. I wouldn't any other type because old VW vans are quirky and compact and a late bay has the most acceptable engineering. After the late bay the quirkyness was lost and they got too big for roomy parking and squeezing through tight spots. I wouldn't have been able to open the doors on anything wider on my drive. Driving one makes me happy, I know not why.

Hey mate, how is it going with vw and the warranty? I had a face to face with the manager I had been dealing with & that was a proper waste of my time to be fair, I left him to ponder on what I wanted & he said he'd get back to me before he sodded off on holiday for 2 weeks, I emailed him on his last day to ask if I was getting an answer before he jetted off but I obviously wasn't high enough up on his list of importance to warrant a reply so I'm now awaiting his return... I shall be reminding him I'm still here when he returns to work next week and adding the most recent lack of communication / support to the ever growing list. To be honest there isn't anything really wrong just a couple of trim bits that need replacing its more about the yeah we shall order that in for you sir & call you to book it in under warranty, couple of months pass with them ignoring my emails & then when I stand in the middle of the sales room shouting the name of the cock that was supposed to reply to be told the items are in lets get you booked in, they are just a bunch of nobs & I told em so too in an email copied to some bigwig in VW who then had the current manager contact me, he's proving to be a nob too but then what do I expect the salesfloor nobs had to have been taught the art of non communication and problem dodging by someone... So far they have all the warranty bits in stock, they have refunded £656 that I gave them for dent n scratch cover following a shit repair & the diamondbrite protection which I even doubt was applied, he's offered to have the crap repair to my passenger door by a twelve year old jack the lad carpark repairer through the insurance they sold me oh & a set of whell nut covers (cos I never had any when I bought it)... My goal is to get a full towbar install for free but we have some more negotiating to do as soon as he's back from his holiday/wedding/honeymoon, I shall keep you posted.

I had a mate who bought a new California ... he had no end of problems trying to get stuff sorted by VW under the warranty ... in the end he flogged it and bought a Fiat Ducato based camper thing. Hope you get yours sorted OK.

I have decided that due to how well the pod refurb has gone that I can't wait for VW to sort a tow bar & although Matt has kindly offered to help me fit one I got a reasonable price from a firm I know & trust to do the towbar & booked the van in for next Friday so we should be all good for Keith's field 👍🏻 Researched tv brackets for the Robowagen & found a real gem over on the T4/5 forum place & ordered it... It arrived, I unbolted the wall bracket part at the first swivel joint & as the guy said the hole allows the headrest to pass through perfectly so no fixing to the interior is required 👍🏻 Aerial works ok on our drive but not in car park at work but tv has a DVD player & I can plug a USB stick or drive in with films on 😁

Tell them you want to keep your bumper bar under the plastic (they will remove it to fit towbar) people always after them on forum and you don't need it with towbar
