I've been researching and reading stuff this evening.
I remember while Heritage were struggling to sell these turnkey (albeit 24v) for £450. That seemed cheap even then tbh Now people are spending £3k on a bare one. What's not generally known is that they're based on a weak alloy crankcase like a Type-1 so no use for a custom build and a bit suspect in a bus compared to every other type-4.
You heard it here first folks.
There is also a general acceptance that rebuilding a Type-4 engine costs £3k min and maybe £5k for a slightly spunkier one. That honestly wasn't my experience. I reckon I spent £2.2k including powder coating, oil cooling with thermostat and exhaust system on mine starting with nothing but the carbs and filters.
It was bad a few years ago but it seems to me the whole bus thing as I knew it jas gone, replaced by a bunch of people trying to justify turning once quirky vehicles into maintenance free fashion accessories. They've missed it by 10 years IMO.
I feel I'm in a rapidly diminishing band of owners who won't need an mot mext time. Maybe it's time to cash it in for an unconverted transit and a tent.

Or maybe get a canal boat to complement it? That way you've got 'cool' (I realise this is a much overused word but couldn't think of a better one at this time of the morning) transport on both land and water.

I had my type 4 completely stripped refurbished and rebuilt a few years ago and it cost me just shy of £2000 which seemed like a fair price to me for the work and new parts I'd had. As for a rapidly diminishing band of MOT exempt (purist ?) owners, that's fine, the less there are the more special I am.

Mine should be MOT exempt as well as far as I understand it.
I'm still going to get a MOT though for an independent view and for things like the brake balance check.

I'm just going to get the garage to put it on the pit and check all the underside stuff like brake pipes, corrosion or driveshaft boots because I'm far to idle to wriggle underneath and get dirt in my eyes. The rest of it like lights, wipers, horn etc I'll know about anyway.

A lot of campsites won't let you on with a trannie and tent though or any commercial vehicle. I'd stick with what you know.

I took 2 type4 cases to the tip along with quite a few other bits a few months ago. Couldn't even give them away.
