I'm pretty shit at electrics so this will probably be a stupid question.
I'm working on my MGB and the cigarette lighter doesn't work but the light in it does.
There's only 2 terminals so I'm flumoxed - obviously power is getting to it but putting a 'plug in' voltmeter shows nothing - the display just doesn't light up.
The only thing I can think of is that there's just a minimal current getting to it, just enough to light it up but no more.
This is a new cigarette lighter as I thought the old one was knackered when it did exactly the same thing.

...and two terminals, one for main power supply, one for the light, connected to dash lights.

Thanks.
This is in the standard plastic console so the main power supply terminal must somehow be behaving as the earth in this case, it's wired in series with other switches etc..
Both lighters are standard MGB ones, the one I replaced being an original from 1974
I'll have another look to see if I can find a wiring diagram that shows the wiring for this to see how it is earthed.
I've got a couple of MGB specific electrical manuals but neither of them cover the cigarette lighter - not a big deal but I'm trying to sort out the mess of wiring in the centre console and trying to do it in a reasonably methodological manner.

Well I spent a fun few minutes last night crawling around in the passenger footwell, in a cramped car port, to get the lighter out of the console again only to find a small bullet connector shaped protuberance at the back, to go with the two 'push-on' connectors at the sides. This must be the live feed for the lighter itself...
I therefore claim the 'Wally' crown from Zed.

You need a modern car for that new socket to work.
