Finally got round to getting my bus taxed for free now it’s within the 40 bracket which was a nice feeling at the post office the other day. I sent off for a birth certificate from Germany as it’s an import Which surprising arrived back within 2 weeks! Always used to hear stories from people saying they waited 6 months, I guess they are quiet due to the virus.
anyway I have a question regarding mot exemption. Now I have no intention of not running without an mot but looking at the restrictions they seem a bit ambiguous, regarding what is regarded as a major change to the vehicle. Now some of you know I have a ej20 Subaru engine in mine which to some would be a major change. But it’s a 2.0 4 cylinder boxer engine the same as a type 4 engine although more powerful. what are people’s views on weather I’m exempt or not?

No idea. But I do know that whatever engine you put in you'd have been tested on emissions relative to the van year not the type or age of the engine. Logically that would say you're ok, but logic probably doesn't apply. Mines exempt and run out too, normally I'd MOT it because it's a dirt cheap safety test, checks things in ways I can't and I get 10 minutes wandering underneath prodding things chatting to the nice chap.

Yes I want to keep an mot on it as I think if you get into an accident it could be a can of worms with insurance companies and like you said a quick safety check . Although if it runs out it’s not a massive drama if I need to drive it until it is mot’d, like collecting it from the body shop for example, although it could be another year until I get it back.

You could read that several ways couldn't you. Wishful thinking says it's still got 4 cylinders so it's ok but I think what they mean is if it has a different number of cylinders to original it definitely isn't?

Like I said though it’s quite ambiguous because it also says if the engine is different it’s not an immediate no, if the vehicle had various engine options type 1, type 2 1600,1700,1800, 2.0 not sure how they will police it tbh.

Not worth worrying about if your getting it mot’d. Mines been exempt for several years and never missed an mot yet. Even took it just at the start of lockdown so it didn’t have a gap.

It’s a grey area I think. Same 4 cylinders, still a 2ltr so what’s the issue 🤷♂️

I don't have my van mot'd now but I do have the guy I've always taken it to do a pre mot check which is what he's always done anyway. Good job because last time he found problems with the rear brakes which I wouldn't have known about because I never use them, much. As far as insurance companies go an mot on a 40+ year old vehicle is not a requirement just as for years a pre 1960 vehicle. I'll do the same with the bikes as well as they are nearly 40 as well. Takes the worry away over someone else "finding" something that isn't really there.
