So the last few days I’ve been having a bit of trouble selecting 1st and 2nd. Sometimes it goes in easy like normal, other times it’s almost impossible and occasionally I have to grind it into reverse but not all the time. I’ve had a look at the clutch and I’ve got about 3 1/2” to 4” of free travel on the pedal. Does the collective think that adjusting my clutch may solve the problem?

As I've never known a clutch cable to stretch unless it's partly broken and about to snap, that, or the end of the steel cable conduit has come adrift from the rear torsion tube. Commonly they break where that conduit ends and the flexible one on the gearbox starts: one should flow into the other but often there's a sharp angle where they meet. If you have washers under the adjusting nut and the sharp angle, putting washers on the end of the flex conduit just before the bracket instead will cure the sharp bend, retain the adjustment and allow the funny wing nut to lock into the clutch lever.

Hmm, so do you think it’s more probably the gear selector linkage which is knackered? If so is it worth doing the front part on its own (he says, not really wanting to take the van off the road to remove an engine and gearbox).

I added a bit more to my last post while you were posting this one. 1" play on the pedal, if that, check with your hand.

Ah right, yes I’ve got lots more play on the pedal which is what made me think about the clutch adjustment first. I’m jacking it up and crawling underneath (Ugh) tomorrow so I’ll check that the bend isn’t too severe and see if I can adjust some of the play out of the pedal. * bloody old campervans, they work perfectly for years and years and then you have to adjust something. Probably worth ordering a new clutch cable as well, just in case. When you coming up this way for a beer and a bag of chips then?

Yes to the new cable, they ONLY stretch when they are breaking. IIRC you need M12 washers to pack out the bowden tube to the correct shape. I wish I could get over your way, as well as the shed I haven't seen my father for almost 2 years.

Just come in from adjusting the cable, I’ve got the free play down from just over 2” to about 1” and the gears are selecting much easier now so hopefully that’s sorted it. I ordered a new cable last night from JK as well so at least I’ll have one if the cable is on it’s way out. Go and visit your father...

On the dad subject, my dad left us when I was about 15/16 I met him again a couple of months ago after maybe only seeing him twice since then (in shops or whatever) hadn't seen him for at least 12 years. He's 74 now but I've at least cleared my conscience should he peg it.

Travelling mucks me up, after the last time I had three ops and I'm still not right enough to travel more than an hour a week. It sure is frustrating.

Well, took it out on a test drive today prior to the weekend’s camping and.....
...it’s better now than it was when I bought it. I must have just got used to the poor gearchanging over the years but today’s been a lovely driving experience. 🙂
