Sorting out the van to come up Keith's tomorrow, had the roof up then when I put it down I hear a crack /bang, turns out a bloody roof hinge has come away from the roof, the rivets have snapped. Not the first time this has happened... It's the front hinge so I can't ignore it , When up, the roof now twists and will pull the next hinge out. Can't get access to drill the snapped rivets out to re rivet it, without making the job a thousand times bigger. I should however be able to get a welding torch in there to weld the hinge to the roof. Any reason why I shouldn't? Hinge appears to be steel. Apart from this weekends camping were off to the lakes in it next week so it needs fixing quick. Its a bodge, and I was hoping the get the roof and poptop all fixed up soon anyway so the poptop would of been coming off.

One should oil ones hinges. They move freely enough, in fact they are very loose moving, it's just the design/fixing method is shit. The hinges can't lay flat to the roof metal due to the profile of it. The roof has never sat quite right and the poxy rivets are way too inadequate in my opinion, so even after it happened last time and davidoft did a fix, a couple of weeks later you could see the hinges were already pulling away from the roof. It's a bloody heavy roof,!

If you weld it will you be able to fix it properly later? If you don't care do it. You can test its metal with a magnet I guess

Not seen yours but you may have to detach hinge from poptop, fix hinge to roof then hinge back to poptop. Front hinge prolly detach front of canvas too? But you know that. Yeah, weld it.

Well some of the hinge areas are getting rusty so it all needs attention anyway, as I say I'm hoping to get the roof sorted soon which will be poptop off job so grinding a hinge off won't make much difference. You know me, I dont care what my van looks like 😀 as long as I can bodge it up to last the month and do the family simmer holiday I'll be happy. Then it can be fixed up proper over the winter. As long as there's not a major reason not to weld it , I'll have a go tomorrow after work. Actually welding the hinges on permanently at roof fixing time is probably better than bloody rivets anyway.....

I'm hoping if I take the gas strut off I can prop the roof in position so the hinge sits just where It supposed to, No need to remove canvas for this way,
