Probably the best mod after the Scooby conversion was 15 inch T4 rear wheels with big tyres on... 6 rib cruising speeds for peanuts..

Power switch in the back sorted that. An excellent mod.

I would quite like to make (have made for me) a 3l flat four but the parts including bigger carbs and exhaust aren't cheap and it's just a number anyway. I bet it would be grunty but it's a lot of money on mostly aftermarket parts (not keen given the choice) to find out.

I've experienced an extra 400 odd cc's, another 600cc's on top of that would be awesome.

because I got fed up with trying to find someone who could do exactly that, and my experience of vw speciallists that f***ed me about or didn't do the job properly or didn't do the work that I had paid for at all. I've had the bus for 7 years now and know its a good un, I should have probably sold it and bought something more modern but hey its done now, pick it up this week. No worries. I feel I have to ask people who justify their Subaru engines by criticising air cooled engines, which can be just dandy imo, why? Down to personal experience I guess, I do understand things can and do go horribly wrong with old engines made from parts that should have been scrapped. I suppose one attraction of a Subaru is you can be pretty sure Subaru made it all from new bits to tight tolerances, even if that was 100k miles or more previously. i.e. you can be more sure what you're getting. To me that's a sad reflection on the state of air cooled engine building which I won't try and defend because I agree. Then again most people think spending £1000-1500 on a rebuild is extortionate so it's not plain sailing for the builders either. Well I picked it up to day with the Subaru conversion done, and do you know I even enjoyed driving it again. I never once felt worried about driving it or thought when's the bloody thing going to break down. Here's to a great summer of trips with my 7yr old son.
