All I read there of a gang of Subaru lovers constantly giving him grief for preferring air cooled and backing their arguments with pure cock and personal insults. Things have changed. The newer bus owner just likes the pretty shape bit can't live with the reality of what it is. Anything that gives them the character that attracted them in the first place they ridicule and aim to get rid of. Air cooled engine to water cooled Pump up window washer to electric Front seats to car seats Front suspension to wishbone Steering box to rack. Electric windows and central locking. What's left? A pretty shape. Not enough for me. It's my opinion that they chose the wrong vehicle, better to sell and buy what they really wanted in the first place - a modern camper. It would save them a lot of hassle. Do what you like to later models, they come with the character pre-removed anyway. It's not my opinion that they're ruining old classics, I couldn't give a shit about that, I just think they're deluded. Eventually most will sell them anyway claiming they're too small for two adults and one small child, or too unreliable, or whatever and move onto the next fad. They bought a dream of freedom that doesn't exist even with a Subaru engine in it. My van still has the quirks, if it didn't I wouldn't want it or I'd put them back.

I think some of them are giving him grief because that's what they like to do - they have history of that and now that their favourite 'targets' no longer post on there he's the next in line. Personally I think he often goes OTT, not just on Scooby engines, but that's my view (said by someone who has electric washers on their 68 and now has power steering since breaking his wrist).

Exactly - do as you like, just don't claim you haven't changed anything. I am biased, I like tinkering with old stuff. For me a Subaru engine would create a huge hole in the pleasure I get from mime. I feel my aircooled is powerful and dependable, I'd happily drive it 5,000 miles without stopping if I didn't need sleep and it was 1/3 to 1/2 the costs quoted to justify subaru conversions. I got a classic vehicle because I like more than just the fashionable shape, I like the whole package. I'm so glad I no longer post on TLB, that site has as much to do with Late Bays as my arse.

Nope not kidding, I find the relentless attacks on anything non standard annoying its why I don't get involved over the road anymore I shouldn't have to feel as if I have to justify defend or explain my choices to anyone. I'm not saying his views are wrong, I'm not saying your views are wrong either but more importantly I'm not telling you that mine are right! I think I have a completely different view towards campers & bugs because I just love em all, yeah mine has no character compared to the bay but we just want to chuck a bag in and go camping whenever we like. I didn't buy a bay because I wanted to live the dream or because its a classic or that it was my dads old bus it was what I could afford at the time. I enjoy seeing what others have done or planning on doing to their campers to make them different or more suited to what they are being used for, I like seeing over modified totally crazy stuff and chuckle when I see an original because they never are because there is always a trinket or sticker somewhere which makes it different to the other original camper parked next to it at a show which is also different in some other way. Ultimately I like to see pics of people using them for camping because that's what I like & view Congi's pics of him away in his Topaz with the same level of envy & happiness that I did when he camped in his bay or the Landmark. Anyway back to my tinkering as I'm not sure I've said this but we have had the Cali now for two years and have camped successfully numerous times be that travelling round with nothing but changes of clothes for a week or in one place for a long weekend, both types of camping for us have different challenges and levels of what we pack and how its packed and my brain is trying to work out how we will camp for 2 weeks when we go over to spain in July. With the van being my daily and the need for 5 seats on occasions was the reason for the Beach but with this brings zero permanent cupboards to store stuff & with the boot being the main area accessing an area 1m deep x 1200mm wide x 500mm high is a challenge. Then inside we have the chemical loo and a bag of clothes plus kids stuff etc. Seat pockets are for the kids to stuff all their gear & I've splashed out on some very posh window bags which will hold our clothing for at least week (hopefully) in an area which isn't compromising anything else other than restricting my view when driving. They are expensive but they sit in the rear windows and don't effect the bed area and allow the seat to convert to bed without getting in the way, I'm hoping this will stop me constantly moving a clothes bag around the van!

Well ! First off I like the new grill Robo, it makes your van look lean and hard. 👍
Next, haha another thread about original versus modified versus Subaru etc etc.
My take on it is that I had no idea there was such a thing as a VW scene, I just got fed up camping on a cycling holiday in Scotland and cracking ice off the tent each morning. All I wanted was a motorhome so when I got back I took Jan motorhome shopping. They are all as boring as beige shit and you can’t really do anything to them once you’ve bought them because it would hammer the resale value. We looked at hundreds and not one of them blew my frock up but I carried on looking and accidentally came across a campervan. That seemed to tick all the boxes because (A) It was a knackered 40 year old van so nothing I did to it would adversely affect the resale value. (B) the inside was crap so I could rip it out make my own interior without it adversely affecting the resale value.
I do tend to buy big stuff on a whim and if I’d taken more time and researched it all a bit better I think I’d probably have decided that the cost of an old VW was too high and bought a big old horse box type van and fitted that out instead.
Having said that I’ve no intention of either getting rid of skippy or sticking a different engine it but that’s only because it’s as reliable as hell and I enjoy pooling along at 55.
I also love the fact that if it breaks down there’s a fairly good chance I’ll be able to fix it and if I can’t they’re so simple most back street mechanics should be able to.
Another thing which makes ownership attractive to me is the number of kids (and adults) who smile and wave as you go past and the amount of people who come up and chat when we’re parked up somewhere.
