Round town, short journeys, driving like a twat because I like the sound of it... but 14mpg is not funny.
Time to get on my bike to work and save the van for the weekends and escapes.

When I had my bay I once got 12mpg towing a trailer around Wales.... how I laughed. I moan now at 34 in the t5 and wish for 40...

Yeah but think how much you're saving on depreciation.

14 is pretty bad. I don't normally calculate, but it's easy when on holiday and doing a lot of miles. Tank 1, a lot of steady 60 on the motorway but one stretch of 30 miles took 2.5 hours = 24 mpg. Tank 2, some motorway, Cornish lanes and 1 hour lost in traffic on the way down = 21 mpg.

The thing is if you want to drive your vehicle somewhere you’re going to have to put fuel in it. I don’t think I’ve ever bothered to check fuel consumption in any vehicle I’ve owned. “Do I want to go out somewhere in my car?” “Yes” “Has it got enough fuel in it?” “Yes” = good “No” = go and buy some. Easy.

On the subject of fuel I've just filled the t5 and broke my previous record. £90 to fill from light on @122.9 a litre. That's the cheapest fuel by me at Sainsbury's it's 10p a litre more at Lichfield by work.

I calculate mpg so I can see if the engine is running ok. If I suddenly take a big drop in mpg I can look at why. Although I like to think i would notice before that

Best I’ve managed is 23mpg: I wish it were the other side of 25, but it’s an improvement on the 17mpg I was getting for a while. It’s the small triumphs 🙄 14mpg sounds a bit like something needs tweaking, even for driving to work etc, doesn’t it?

14mpg thrashing about on short journeys sounds about right/not too bad for a type-4 engine if that's what it is. I'd expect a bit more from a type-1.

I was getting 14 mpg thraping it down and around Devon a few years back with my type -1, I'd been messing with jets on the Dells and had left in what I thought gave best power/torque, I had other jets with me and changed them after filling up and got 21 for the rest of the holiday.

My dad has a 1700 auto and it only makes 17 on long trips. My 2.0 does25 on a trip but drops to mid teens on town runs. It’s better that one car I ran in my old job that did 0.89 mpg yes less than one mpg. But it was a 6.0ltr V12.
