I still have some oil leaks on my engine, in spite of sorting a lot already (breather box, oil cooler, sandwich plate seal, remote cooler hoses ....). I am also bored of crawling around in the drive trying to work out where the remaining leaks are. Any suggestions for someone who actually knows what they are doing with a Type 4 air cooled motor and isn't miles from my location in Northern Lincolnshire?

The most annoying one I had was a cracked brand new oil cooler. It dripped onto the filter so always looked like that or the sandwich plate seal but I tracked it down eventually. My flywheel seal leaks too. And some pushrod tubes. It's rare to see a leak free one. Pretty sure there are quite a few "specialists" in Lincoln, or there's pkrboo, he appears to be morphing into a part time "whip the engine out in 10 minutes" kind of guy.

Eoin I Can have a look. I am by no means an expert though. I'm in Kirton Lindsey, whereabouts are you?

Edit: Will have to meet up and compare vans some day. My youngest goes to the gliding club at Kirton most weekends.

I've not used an air cooled specialist yet that I would go back to voluntarily. Leak free is still my goal!

Recommended by someone, going to meet up for a chat first but he sounds like he knows what he's on about on the phone.

Went down to see Mike at Tuxford. Nice bloke, got a T25 Synchro. Retired engineer does work on air cooled VW part time and got a lift in his garage. Leak was from the flange joint where the filler tube joins the block. The flange looked a bit off square and the gasket was upside down. Replaced with gasket and sealer added, now tight. No oil visible after 45 minutes running time. Now need to see if that's the last leak sorted.

Not as much oil leaking, but still some. Getting some oil blowing out of the dipstick tube. Wrapped with kitchen towel at 2 points (to eliminate oil blowing up from below) and it's running down the outside of the tube.
What causes this? Guessing either / both high crankcase pressure / high oil level.
For the breather, I'm still running through the charcoal filter. Might disconnect and put in a temp catch can.
For the oil level, Mike told me that the dipstick is the wrong one. Maybe I'm overfilling. 234 mm from upper marker to point where dipstick sits on the top of the tube. When we did the filler gasket, I refilled 2.5 litres, ran and checked and was at minimum level. Further 0.5 litres to hit max.

Found an online picture of a dipstick with dimensions. My low works out about the same, my high a little lower (smaller gap between the lines).
Remove dipstick and run engine, no noticeable pressure at dipstick pipe. Rev engine and a slug of oil geys puked out of the pipe.
Crankcase vent is piped to the charcoal filter, remove this and rev again. No oil.
Going to repipe direct to the T split to the air filters and bypass the charcoal completely. Petrol fumes will no longer end up back in the engine, but that doesn't seem to be a big issue.
Then out for a drive in the morning to see if there's anything left to do.

Repiped and done 20 miles. Not a drop underneath.
